Leadership: Slavery in Libya
Leadership is taking responsibility for others. Why is there slavery in Lybia and what is our leadership doing about it? Where is the African Union? What about ECOWAS? Do the African leaders understand the plight of the people? I hear conversations in Silos but nothing comprehensive to hold Libya accountable for the atrocities. Leadership is servitude; how are we serving our brothers and sisters in Libya? Slavery in 2017 really? We need to understand the magnitude of what is happening.
All I’m hearing is condemnation against Libya and few caring individuals have intervened in their limited capacity. Nigeria is taking the lead bringing home its citizens but is that enough? There are various human rights violations against the Libyan government towards fellow Africans in their country.
So what do we do to ensure that people do something about Slavery? Who will take the lead on this issue? The African Union needs to take a more aggressive move to free the slaves from Libya. There are systemic issues in our various countries that make citizens migrate to other countries and become slaves illegally or become legal residents and working in low wage jobs.
Does Africa want to repeat the same trend that happened over 5 centuries ago where slaves were taken from various countries to the Americas and the Caribbean Islands? Are we going to sit back and not do anything about our own people? In the Western countries, this would not be tolerated among because their citizens have value. It is up to us to demand for justice for our people.
Well, Nigerians…Africans…Global Citizens Its time to take a stance. We need to hold the African Union, ECOWAS and the Libyan Government accountable to put a stop to modern day slavery in our continent. The time for excuses is over…let us do something about the plight of our people.
