7 Goal Thieves

Many of us have New Year Resolutions at the end of the previous year.  “This year is my year!”  is a common statement I hear at the beginning of every year.  If we are really honest with ourselves are we any better than the year before?  The only thing that has changed for some of us is a number.  Unbeknownst to us, there are 7 Goal thieves lurking in the recesses of our subconsciousness that steal our goals.  Everyone is born with potential for greatness.  Myles Monroe spent his life’s work preaching to the world about our inborn potential.  Each and every one of us is born with a purpose and plan for our lives.  Our subconscious nudges us to meet those goals but the following distractions inhibit us for moving forward.  Below are the 7 Goal Thieves that keep us from fulfilling our destiny.

The first time I launched my blog on September 18, 2017 was one of the scariest moments of my life.  My mind went into so many directions.  What if it doesn’t work?  And people don’t want what I have to share to the world?  Will Nigerians at home and abroad be ready for what I have to say?  So many thoughts flooded through my mind that I didn’t know what to do.  Fear is the acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real.  Since September 2017 I have over 30,000 likes and followers and Facebook and over 3000 readers a month.  Not bad for a newbie, right?  The only way is forward and up and I cannot stop till my voice is heard by the masses.

Fear can suck out every enthusiasm you may have about your goals and dreams.  An inner emotion that  will immobilize your ability to create and take risks.  It is natural for the human brain to make you feel safe.  Replace fear with courage and excitement.  Mel Robbins mentions that the same emotion for anxiety and fear, is excitement.  Use the fear and become courageous and turn the emotion to excitement.  Embrace Fear and fulfill your goals anyway.  This means…you are courageous.

Doubt which is another one of the 7 Goal thieves is uncertainty on your ability to fulfill your goals.  My first video recording on the Transform Nigeria platform was interesting.  One cameraman, my web designer, and my script projected on the TV screen in my living room.  It took forever to record a 3-minute video.  It gave me a whole new respect for content creators.  When I wanted to release the video, I doubted that people would resonate with my message.  My web designer and developer said…” I don’t think the quality is up to par”.  But I thought, you know what, let’s release the video because if I wait for perfection, procrastination will come in.

When I was listening to Grant Cardone’s book “Be Obsessed or Be Average” he said, his best-selling book “Sell or Be sold” was a hit.  However, the book initially had typos and run-on sentences because it was his first book.  He wanted his message to spread so he took the risk.  Now the book is one of the most talked about in the sales industry.  Don’t doubt yourself.  If you have an idea, share it with the world.  Don’t be around people who feed the self-doubt.  Some of those folks are even your loved ones.  You are unique and special.  Know who you are and educate yourself on your craft.  With more knowledge comes self-confidence.  You are here for a purpose, trust in who you are.  Success is your only option.

This is another major one of the 7 Goal thieves.  Unbelief is the misinterpretation of who you are as a person.  There is a reason that human beings are the top of the food chain.  We are spirits who came as a soul, and live in a shell of a body, and can will things into existence.  I believe that I can do anything.  I just know within the recesses of my soul that I am destined for greatness and success and that is exactly what I receive.  In Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich”, one of the pillars of success is Belief.  You have to know that you can.  It is that simple.  Unbelief will suck any motivation you may have about your goal like a vampire.  Although I love vampire movies, unbelief is a creature that can rob your subconscious mind from bringing success to your possession.  Conquer unbelief by understanding who you are and what you have to offer to the world.

Procrastination is a fancy English word for Laziness.  What do I mean?  “I’ll do it tomorrow”.  Why put it off?  Because you don’t feel like working on that goal today and now.  Why don’t you feel like it?  Well, because you are lazy.  I am guilty of procrastination in different areas of my life and a work in progress.  It is important to overcome procrastination and stop yourself, and just pay the price to achieve your goals.  Understand the gravity of not achieving your goals.  An unfulfilled life is a life with no direction or purpose.  Procrastination which is one of the 7 goal thieves, can lead to an unfulfilled life.  Let us overcome this habit and become successful in every area of our lives.

Distractions are disastrous. Sometimes they are harmless ones by our loved ones and friends.  When horses are set for a race course, there are blinders on both sides of their eyes.  Why is that? This prevents them from racing in a different direction from the finish line.  We need to put invisible blinders to protect our eyes to see the finish line.  Complete your goals and press forward towards your dreams.  If you need a mentor who has passed through where you are, get one, he or she can be your blinders to keep you on track.  The mentor is accountability partner that can prevent you from distractions.  Alex Weiss, a world-renowned consultant would talk about his dog being distracted from catching the ball to chasing a squirrel.  Distraction is not amusing as we pursue our dreams.

We women are the worst excusologists (excuse professionals) ever.  Some of us can say that we have started a family and the demands would prevent us from fulfilling our goals.  The most common story in the book.  It doesn’t matter! Why can’t you have it all?  A female bank executive I spoke to, hired a house manager with a Master’s degree that helped with the kids and ensured they did their homework, ate well, and went to bed on time.  With an understanding spouse, that can work.  If your spouse is a bit old-fashioned, manage his ego and chase your dreams.

One of my Spiritual leaders, Apostle Stanford would say that “Excuses are convenient lies”.  I used to think the man was just a difficult person.  However, as I evolved and got older with more experience, I realized he hit the nail right on the head.  The worst person to deceive is ourselves. That is another one of his many quotes.  Don’t let yourself off the hook and gives all kinds of reasons why you cannot achieve your goals.  I believe in myself and what I can offer.  I take on challenges no matter the magnitude because I just believe.  There is an innate sense of self-confidence that I feel that no matter what the challenge, I can overcome.

Grant Cardone on “Be Obsessed or Be Average” would say in his audio book, “Stop being a little B***h”.  I know that’s the truth.  “My parents are sick”, “I was mistreated as a little child”, “I need to take care of the kids”, “I’m not a people person”.  Seriously?  Stop with the excuses, if you have a goal to achieve, be a grown up and do it.  Just like Nike…Just do it!  Don’t let excuses steal your goals.

I am overcoming this modus operandi.  This is another one of the 7 Goal thieves that can hurt us.  I have made a commitment to lose weight and be healthy.  Honestly, it has not been easy but I know it has to be done.  In the mornings…to wake up is a challenge.  Mel Robbins has this motto of counting from 5 to 1 and doing the opposite of what you feel like doing.  That has really helped me when I don’t feel like getting up.  I go through setbacks but I keep going because I foresee a bikini with my husband in the next 90 days.  Brian Tracy, another one of my mentors would always speak on self-discipline.  He quotes, “Self-discipline is doing what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it whether you feel like it or not”.

Laziness is the complete opposite of self-discipline.  It is culmination of procrastination, excuses, and distractions.  Let’s not make excuses for not putting in the time and energy to fulfill our goals.  Push past yourself and reach for the desired goal.  Apostle Stanford would always talk about denying “Self”.  I used to hate that statement with a passion.  If I deny myself then how would I know who I am?   As this point, I understand that “self” is the safety zone the mind is comfortable with.  Get past the safety zone to reach your potential.

This article is a bit longer than my usual pieces but it was a form of therapy for me. I am on a journey to fulfill my dreams.  I’m not much of a church person but the end of our faith is the salvation of our souls.  I’m on a journey till six feet under.  Let us keep going until we have given the world everything we have to offer.  Once we eliminate these 7 Goal thieves, we are on our way to fulfilling our destiny and reaping everything life has to offer.  See you at the top.

Spread the love
