5 Health Goals Survive Nigeria
Change agents, this is an issue that should be addressed to us as Nigerians. We are natural born hustlers working with the hand we have been dealt. The country is not very enabling for us to thrive. However, many of us do away with the “Government” excuse and work hard to put food on the table. A consequence of that is our health. There are many cases of people dropping dead on their laptops, walking home from work because of stress. Our health is the number one asset we possess. It is important to include this aspect of our lives to our goals for 2018 as the year quickly passes by. The following are 5 Health goals survive Nigeria that I believe would help us be more productive in the hustle to fulfill our destiny.
Exercise cannot be overemphasized in the quest for productivity. When I compare days that I exercise and when I don’t, the difference is like 7 up. My mind is clearer and I am able to get more done because of the increased energy level derived from exercise. Exercising everyday can put structure in a morning routine and set the tone for the rest of the day. Technology in this case is such a blessing. I have the “30 Day Fitness Challenge” which is a very accommodating app with various exercises for problem areas. This has helped me stay in shape and cope with stress. Do you know that you can let out stress through daily exercise? You would be surprised. Lagosians I know you head off to work at 4-5 am in the morning and come back 10-11pm. The stress is nothing to write home about. Please try to make time to exercise. You will thank me later.
Nigerian diet is full of starch, oil, fat, and all the deliciousness we love. I am an Edo (Ishan) woman married to an Igbo man. Both families love swallow with delicious soup. In my husband’s case concoction soup (Egusi and Okra) with Eba. What caused most of my weight gain was I would wait till hubby came home from work to eat. In Lagos with traffic, that is not a good idea if I want to eat early. Though it was a great bonding experience for us, it was not good for my weight. In addition, he loves swallow so that heavy starch with fat is not good for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still love it! I just eat it earlier in the day and much less of it.
My strategy is to eat vegetables (cabbage, carrots, green pepper, cucumber) with all my meals. It provides a more balanced meal to offset all that starch that comes with our rice, yam, pasta and swallow. Do what works for you; some people substitute for vegetarian options. As long as you eat till you are satisfied (not full). One of my spiritual leaders, Apostle Stanford would say “Eat to live not Live to Eat” and “Don’t dig your grave with your teeth”. Obesity leads to a higher rate of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and so many dangerous diseases. My fellow change agents, you need energy, eat right and be healthy.
I need to practice what I preach but this is an important aspect of fulfilling my health goals. Don’t wait till there is something wrong to get a health check. Some of us wait till we are sick before heading to the hospital. Ensure you go to the hospital at least once a year and get a comprehensive check-up. This helps us detect any potential threats to our health. Diabetes can be detected afar off, Cancer, and high blood pressure and a host of other diseases. These can be curtailed during an annual checkup before it is too late. Change agents, we only have one life to live and fulfill our destiny. Let us take care of the one body that we have.
Research says that 7-8 hours of sleep provides the body time to rejuvenate. I find that when I am more rested, I’m more productive. Please ensure you fulfill one of the 5 Health goals by getting plenty of rest. Most times rest is synonymous to Laziness. There are times that our goals may demand more hours in the day and sleepless nights. Ensure you make up for it and rejuvenate your body and get some sleep. Turn off the TV and phone and go to bed. Your body will thank you for it.
We human beings are social creatures. Invest in your relationships and be around people that inspire your dreams. I’m not talking about drama. I remember one of my aunties in Atlanta was the head of an Association. Nothing but drama week after week. That is not the kind of socializing I am talking about. We need to bond with friends and family to feel that we are loved and appreciated for who we are as human beings. Socializing gives us a sense of fulfilment.
We Nigerians love our party gatherings and get-togethers. My parents never have a free weekend. One birthday, wedding, funeral, memorial or another. This keeps them busy and happy. It’s like constantly going out on multiple dates every weekend. Ensure that you take time to bond with friends, family, mentors that feed your destiny.
As you review these 5 Health Goals Survive Nigeria, review where you are with your health. As a result work to be better so that you can Transform Nigeria. It starts with your home, work and other areas of your life. If our health is transformed, so will our families and communities. Let us work hard on ourselves so we can become the change agents Nigeria needs to be great.
