2018 Business Goals
Its 2018 good people!!! It is time to set our 2018 Business Goals. Are we not excited? New frontier, New opportunities, New Ideas. Nigeria is a country that is evolving to take its rightful place. It is important for us to embrace innovation, and utilize the problems we have to create solutions that will Transform Nigeria. What does that mean? Nigeria is a country with many opportunities and gems hidden in the problems. That is why businesses are springing up.
Small and Medium scale enterprises are the backbone of every nation around the world. Once you attend school, do not wait for a job, create one. The founders of Jobberman, other internet startups started from university, and took control of their destiny. We really need to take the bull by the horn and create radical 2018 business goals.
Existing businesses should create radical goals to ensure you are able to become a great brand that would impact the Nigerian society. We should utilize opportunities (Problems) available in Nigeria to make a difference thereby positively affecting the Nigerian economy. President Buhari spent $1 billion to search for oil in Northern Nigeria. How about solar energy? The number of days of sunlight exceeds the days of rain and storm in the North. Oil and Natural Gas will soon be obsolete in a matter of decades. We as a nation need to embrace innovation. Here are some things to consider when starting a business (Prior to writing a business plan and talking to investors).
Vision: If the vision does not scare you or outlive you, it’s not ambitious enough. It takes the same energy to dream big as it is to dream small. Let’s make it so big that it scares and excites us!!!
Mission: A mission is what you are going to do to fulfill the vision. It is slightly more specific than the vision. If your vision is to inspire people then the mission gives you the “how” the vision will happen. Your vision is the “why” and the mission is the “how”.
Goals: This provides some of the knots and bolts of how the vision and mission will happen. It provides specific activities that will meet the vision along with timelines. These goals help in keeping the business focused on the mission and vision. Ensure your goals are in line with your vision and mission so that your customers, vendors, and employees understand the identity of the business.
These are a few lessons to learn when starting and running a business. SMEs are the highest employers in Nigeria and many countries around the world. These businesses are the backbone of any economy. Nigeria is not the most enabling environment for small businesses but most have survived the storm. The deeper the foundation, the taller the building. You are a diamond in the rough…see you at the top!
